Abstract

Introduction: High blood pressure is a significant health issue globally, including in India. Elevated serum uric acid levels are associated with high blood pressure, and it's believed that uric acid may contribute to early-onset hypertension in certain cases. The purpose of this investigation was to explore the correlation between essential hypertension and blood uric acid levels.

Materials and Method: This observational cross-sectional encompassed all patients attending the Outpatient Department (OPD) or Inpatient Department (IPD) with a diagnosis of Essential Hypertension. Study participants were selected based on specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. A comprehensive medical history, detailed physical examinations, and appropriate investigations were conducted for all patients. Data were collected using a pre-designed and pre-tested questionnaire. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 22.0. The Student t-test and chi-square test were employed to analyze mean differences and frequency variations between the two groups, respectively.

Results: Cases exhibited significantly higher mean Systolic and Diastolic blood pressure compared to controls. Moreover, cases had significantly elevated mean Serum Uric Acid levels compared to controls. Notably, subjects with Stage 2 Hypertension demonstrated significantly higher mean Serum Uric Acid levels. Similarly, subjects with a Duration of Hypertension exceeding 5 years displayed notably elevated mean Serum Uric Acid levels.

Conclusion: It was observed that individuals with hypertension had notably elevated blood uric acid levels compared to normotensive individuals. Stage II hypertension was associated with a similar prevalence of hyperuricemia among both genders and was more prevalent in individuals with a longer duration of hypertension.
